Thomas Benton Brooks papers, 1861-1863.

The collection consists of papers of Thomas Benton Brooks from 1861-1863. The papers relate solely to Brooks' service in the New York Volunteer Engineers during the Civil War. Includes three reports to his commanding officer, Edward W. Serrell regarding the activities of the Regiment from Hilton Head (S.C.) on December 31, 1861, from Seabrook (S.C.) on February 6, 1862, and from Tybee Island (Ga.) on February 28, 1862. The papers also include two letters, one (July 16, 1862) from Brooks to Lt. Col. James F. Hall outlining his military career and resolution of a dispute over the captaincy of his regiment and a letter (January 10, 1863) from P. Maguire at Hilton Head (S.C.) describing the construction of powder magazines and the commissions of various officers in the 1st New York Volunteer Engineers.
